Study KAM: Fact sheet piano duo / guitar duo

  • BA KAM, elective catalog
  • MA KAM, elective catalog

Working in a piano or guitar duo can be taken as a special form of chamber music in the elective subject.

1. Registration

As a rule, students register as an already formed duo; in exceptional cases, individual registration is also possible. In these cases, the responsible lecturers will try to find a duo partner if there are further individual registrations. Duo partners can seek advice from the responsible lecturers on the choice of repertoire.

2. Rehearsal options (two pianos)

Piano duo students have the opportunity to rehearse literature for one or two pianos.

If the decision is made in favor of one or more works for two pianos, the students involved must independently obtain permission to rehearse for two pianos in selected rooms at the beginning of the semester. This requires an informal confirmation from the supervising lecturer that a second grand piano is required for the current duo project. This can be used to apply for a rehearsal permit from Prof. Axel Gremmelspacher (axel.gremmelspacher@hfmdk-frankfurt.de), who is responsible for the (modern) grand and upright pianos at the university.

3. Teachers

Students register informally with their desired lecturer with their project request. In the case of a piano duo, this can be - depending on capacity - either the university teachers for piano chamber music Prof. Angelika Merkle and Prof. Hansjacob Staemmler, or the student's own teacher in the piano major, in the case of the guitar duo Prof. Christopher Brandt.

4. Crediting

Projects for guitar/piano duo can be credited both in the elective subject guitar/piano duo and in the subject chamber music (compulsory or elective area).
